Nobody visits a pick and mix stall expecting it to be cheap, but everyone deserves a treat now and then. That's why, during a trip to Manchester Christmas Markets at the weekend, I allowed my daughter to get a selection of the goodies on offer at the Kingdom of Sweets stall.
There's one at the bottom end of Market Street, but it was the one at the top end, close to the stall we'd eaten at in Piccadilly Gardens, that we stopped off at. But I was staggered to discover that what she got cost a whopping £14.34. I didn't want to ask to return some once she'd put them in the bag and I should have realised that the sign, advertising that it Is £3.29 per 100g, is a damn sight more than you'll typically pay for sweets.
A 175g bag of Haribo for example, cost £1.25 at Aldi or Tesco, which works out at 71p per 100g, around four times cheaper. Prices are often in the spotlight at the market and we reported last month how the price of sausages has risen this year.
