Gazza reveals Calpol addiction that saw him banned from every chemist in Newcastle

Former footballer Paul Gascoigne, aka Gazza, has opened up on his addiction to the children's pain relief medication, Calpol, as he revealed that he was "banned from every chemist in Newcastle".

Gazza made the comments on Channel 4's Scared of the Dark, in scenes which will be shown to viewers of the show tonight.The 55 year old opened up on his previous battles with alcohol addiction that saw him enter, and then leave, rehab, before he got hooked on Calpol.

He explained to his co-stars: “Unfortunately, I’ve got this addiction personality. I stopped going to rehab for stupid reasons you know.

I was like, that’s the addict side of us so I went for Calpol. "Calpol has 0.00 and it’s 1% of alcohol. And I thought well if I buy ten bottles, that’s like having nearly a pint. "I was going round chemists and saying listen, I didn’t wanna tell anyone but I’ve got nine kids, I need Calpol." He continued: "They [the chemists] were saying 'nine kids, what you doing with nine kids?' so I went 'yeah but don’t tell my family.
