The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special saw Laura Aikman, 39, reprising her role as Smithy's girlfriend Sonia. Fans were left gobsmacked when she appeared in the finale, as they had been expecting James Corden's character Smithy to tie the knot with Ruth Jones' Nessa, following her proposal in the 2019 cliffhanger episode.

Instead, Smithy was seen getting ready for his nuptials with Sonia.The BBC went above and beyond to keep this plot twist under wraps - even involving an unsuspecting fan.

On Sunday, Waterloo Road actress Laura took to Instagram to reveal that due to the secrecy surrounding the storyline, she wasn't able to go wedding dress shopping in person.

Instead, a gown was purchased from a second-hand site. Sharing snaps of herself in the stunning dress, she penned: "We couldn't go wedding dress shopping (because of the secrecy), so this was from Vinted, (it probably belonged to someone who watched the show! ) Shout out to our costume designer #ShanJames who had to alter it massively as 48 hrs before we shot the wedding it didn't fit.
