Gas leak sparks emergency evacuation of Scots homes as cops close busy road

A gas leak in Edinburgh city centre has sparked an emergency evacuation of at least 45 flats.Emergency services remain in attendance at the junction of Lady Lawson Street and West Post on Saturday, September 23.Police have cordoned off the road while three Scottish Fire and Rescue Service vehicles have also been sent to the scene.Southern Gas Networks (SGN) have confirmed their engineers are in attendance following reports of “ongoing gas escape”.An SGN spokesperson said: “We have got an ongoing gas escape at West Port in Edinburgh.

There has been a road closure put in place to ensure safety of our engineers and the public as we carry out our investigations.“Approximately 45 flats have been evacuated.

We are sorry for the disruption this has caused.”One shocked onlooker told Edinburgh Live they witnessed the emergency response at around 7pm.

They said: “I was just walking past the area and immediately saw various police cars and a fire engine too.“Other locals were watching on as well, people all seemed confused as to what was going on.
