Joe Otterson TV Reporter HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order to a new comedy series from Chuck Lorre and Nick Bakay with Sebastian Maniscalco set for the lead role, Variety has learned. The single-camera show is titled “How to Be a Bookie.” HBO Max has given it an eight-episode order. Per the official logline, “A veteran bookie (Maniscalco) struggles to survive the impending legalization of sports gambling, increasingly unstable clients, family, co-workers, and a lifestyle that bounces him around every corner of Los Angeles, high and low.” Lorre and Bakay serve as co-writers and executive producers on the show. Maniscalco will executive produce in addition to starring, with Judi Marmel also executive producing. Warner Bros. Television is the studio. Chuck Lorre productions is currently under an overall deal at WBTV. The show marks Lorre’s first series at HBO Max.

Television Group, Lena Waithe’s company Hillman Grad Productions will adapt “The Book of Mycah,” a novella written by Joshua Bennett. “The Book of Mycah” takes place in an alternate history America where Malcolm X came back from the dead in 1965. The television project is based on Bennett’s novella of the same name, which leads his most recent collection, “The Study of Human Life.” The book was published on Sept. 20 by Penguin Random House. Waithe and Hillman Grad CEO Rishi Rajani will serve as executive producers on the TV adaptation, while creative executive Sylvia Carrasco will oversee the production. Bennett is a professor of English and creative writing at Dartmouth College. Along with “The Study of Human Life,” he is the author of three books of poetry and literary criticism: “The Sobbing School” (Penguin, 2016), which was a National Poetry Series selection and a finalist for an NAACP Image Award; “Being Property Once Myself” (Harvard University Press, 2020); and “Owed” (Penguin, 2020). The title – and theme – of this year’s convention was “The Fight For Attention” and the broadcasters and content creators discussed challenges, strategy and sustainability, especially in the shadow of a looming recession. Undoubtedly, content is still the most important factor for broadcasters, streamers and viewers alike. “Content is still probably the most – for sure, in my opinion – the most important [factor],” in terms of consumer choice, said Warner Bros Discovery International president Gerhard Zeiler, who said that as well as continuing to invest in local content the company was of course investing in franchises such as Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and more. Unsurprisingly, Jan Koeppen, president of IP powerhouse The Walt Disney Company EMEA, also said that in an era of choice, content would be the deciding factor. Said Koeppen: “Even with economic woes that we have right now, people are going back to quality, and I think great content will win.”
