Former US president Donald Trump has been charged over attempts to overturn the 2020 election result. Official court documents have confirmed the indictment tonight (August 1).

Mr Trump was denied a second term as US president by Joe Biden following the vote in November 2020. But the Republican repeatedly claimed the results of that poll were false, and in January 2021, a number of his supporters stormed the US Capitol.

Mr Trump, who has been intending to run for election again in 2024, announced his own belief he would be indicted earlier this evening.

Posting on his own social media platform, Truth Social, Mr Trump wrote: "I hear that Deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere with the Presidential Election of 2024, will be putting out yet another Fake Indictment of your favorite President, me, at 5pm.
