Paul Green cut an unremarkable figure. Bald, suited and in his 50s, one observer remarked that he 'looked just like your dad'.
But for Green, a ‘wheeler dealer’ who had once run hairdressers and a cleaning company, the game was up. He was stood in a courtroom, fighting for his life.
Because behind the bland façade, he was actually the head of an international crime gang, responsible for the biggest drug smuggling operation the UK has ever seen.
Quite how he made this extraordinary transformation is unclear, and may never be known. Green liked to portray himself as a successful businessman, with the clothes, jewellery, cars and property to go with it.
