Five times more pupils are attending England's school than during the first lockdown, figures show today. Official statistics show 21% of of pupils attended state primary schools last Wednesday, more than five times the number in the first lockdown.
In May last year, just 4% of state primary pupils were attending school. The figures were less dramatic for state secondary schools, which had 5% attendance last Wednesday - but again, this was five times the 1% of pupils who attended in May 2020.
It comes after unions voiced fears that attendance may not drop enough to suppress the spread of the virus in the community, as many 'key workers' are told to keep going into the workplace.
