First-time Covid fines 'may increase from £200 to £5,000' to stop rule-breakers

Covid-19 rule-breakers could be increased to £5,000 to crack down on the growing number of lockdown-flouting Covidiots.Government ministers are said to be discussing the proposed increase in a bid to try and "improve compliance" and stop people flouting coronavirus restrictions.The increase for the sum on first-offence breaches is said to be under discussion as well as repeated rule-breaking being set as high as £10,000.A government source told The Times: "The level of fines in the UK is significantly lower than elsewhere."We are looking at whether they are sufficient."Fixed penalty notices for individuals are normally £200 for a first offence in England, lowered to £100 if the fine is paid within 14 days.
