Parkinson’s disease. After suffering from the disease for over five years, the filmmaker was confirmed dead by his wife on wednesday, who said he died in his sleep at his apartment in New York City.
Downey Sr was a leading filmmaker during the 1950s and 60s in independent US cinema built on low budgets. Focusing on counter-culture and anti-establishment films, he is best known for the 1969 satire Putney Swope which was praised for its progressive satire on race in corporate America, as well as 1972 Greaser’s Palace.
