After months of cold, wintry weather, many homeowners may be wondering when they can head outside to cut their grass. But garden enthusiasts who are keen to tidy their outdoor space are being urged to wait before mowing their lawns.

Gardening guru Calum Maddock from HomeHow has pinpointed a specific date that is the optimal time for the first lawn trim of the year, as it aligns with typical soil temperature rises which make grass more likely to grow.

Calum explains: "The grass will begin to grow when the soil temperature goes above six degrees Celsius." He recommends holding off on cutting dewy or damp grass, earmarking March 18 as the prime time for the first trim of the season.

He explained: "Before that, the grass will still remain dormant as it has over winter." For a successful first cut, the expert urges gardeners to take a gentle approach, suggesting trimming less than a third of the grass blade to prevent disease and bald patches, reports the Mirror.
