European Film Awards Set Athens As Location For 39th Ceremony In January 2027

The European Film Awards, Europe’s equivalent of the Oscars, will head to the Greek capital of Athens for its 39th ceremony on January 16 2027.

It will mark the second time the ceremony will take place at the beginning of the year rather than its previous December slot.

The date shift was announced in 2023 as part of a drive to make the EFAs more relevant in the wider awards season. The 38th EFA ceremony will take place in Berlin in January 2026.

In a first for a Southeastern European country, the 39th awards ceremony will take place in Athens’ Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), preceded by the traditional Mayor’s Night reception on the eve of the award ceremony at the Zappeion Megaron. “We are incredibly proud that the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Centre – Creative Greece has successfully secured Athens as the host city of the 39th European Film Awards an event that takes place for the first time in the Southeastern Europe,” said Leonidas Christopoulos, CEO of the Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center – Creative Greece. “The selection of Athens highlights the city’s long and rich cultural heritage and also reflects Greece’s growing dynamism and influence in the European film and audiovisual industry.” The European Film Awards were first presented in Berlin in 1988, to promote and support the European film industry.
