Erik ten Hag has told Dean Henderson he has to "fight" for playing time as long as he is at Manchester United. Henderson is nearing a return from a thigh problem that has kept him sidelined for the last six months and he has been training with the United squad on their pre-season tour of the United States.
The 26-year-old was not named in the matchday squads in either of United's friendlies with Arsenal or Real Madrid and it is unlikely he will be involved in their final tour game against Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Nottingham Forest want to sign Henderson but their initial proposal of a loan deal with the obligation to buy if he played a number of games was rejected by United. "We have a group of keepers and, as everyone else, you have to fight for your position," Ten Hag said. "I think that's normal when you're at United.
And he is a good goalie, he has to fight and we have to see when he can return to team training." Jonny Evans will remain in the States and start training with the United senior squad in San Diego, as will 19-year-old striker Joe Hugill.
