Ralf Rangnick previously said that Manchester United needed a major overhaul similar to an "open-heart operation" - something newly-sacked Erik ten Hag agreed with.

Before Ten Hag stepped into the managerial role at Old Trafford, outgoing interim manager Rangnick emphasised the importance of injecting "positive energy" for the new team and manager by acquiring the "best possible players".
