The former Middlesbrough boss holds a close friendship with both Sir Dave Brailsford and the incoming director of football Dan Ashworth having worked with both men in the FA set-up.
It is understood Erik ten Hag's future at United is up in the air after a disappointing second season in the Premier League.
The Manchester Evening News has reported that Ratcliffe is not 100 per cent sold on keeping the Dutchman beyond this season with Champions League qualification and FA Cup triumph needed to keep him employed.
