The latest Emmerdale story has been dividing opinion amongst viewers everywhere with Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) going against Gus Malcolms (Alan McKenna) for custody of baby Ivy.

And while sometimes certain storylines can be stressful for the actors, they confess that having babies on set has eased the tension their characters are feeling. “I work with animals and babies, it’s the best job,” says Zoe. “We’ve had two little babies so far, and they’re both an utter delight.

We all get a bit territorial, too. I’ll go, ‘Alan, you’ve been hogging that baby. Can you hand her over, please?’ There’s a lot of that that goes on.They’re absolutely dreamy, aren’t they?” “They’ve been brilliant, more than mine were at that age,” adds Alan. “We worked with [child actress] Alice Maeve Leigh when she was a week old in the first scenes and as much as it’s lovely having a baby on set, it also elevates the scene. “If you’re doing a scene and you’ve got a baby in your arms, it just takes it somewhere you can’t go as an actor without that – it’s amazing. “We do the rehearsals with the dummy, and then you put the real baby in and you’re not acting.” The complicated story always stirs up some sort of reaction amongst viewers, but Alan says it’s even had the crew talking. “Early on when we were filming, the crew were going, ‘I’m definitely team Rhona,” says Alan. “Then we’d do another scene and I’d hear, ‘Oh I don’t know, maybe I’m team Gus.’ “I’m hoping this story doesn’t create a whole industry of embryo thefts – hopefully we haven’t opened up a can of worms here!” As the story continues to ramp up, spoilers reveal Marlon and Gus have a fight over the baby.
