Karla Sofía Gascón is clearing up recently made comments involving fellow Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres. The Emilia Pérez star is nominated in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards along with the I’m Still Here star Torres.

Gascón claimed in an interview that people around Torres were trying to diminish her work but made it clear that her remarks were not aimed at the Brazilian actress. “I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres, and it has been wonderful getting to know her over the past few months,” Gascón said. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience.” She continued, “Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.” Emilia Pérez has been controversial among audiences, and social media has not been kind to the Jacques Audiard-directed film.

Amid the controversy, Torres, who recently won at the Golden Globes for her acting work in I’m Still Here, addressed the “hate” online and asked people to be kind to Gascón. “Everybody deserves our affection.
