The Government has published new official guidelines ahead of the wearing of face coverings becoming mandatory on Friday. In less than 24 hours it will be required for everyone in England to cover their nose and mouth when in a shop.

Venues such as pubs and restaurants will be exempt from the rule, Birmingham Live reports. The regulations will be made under the Public Health (Control of Disease) Act 1984 - the same law used as the basis for many lockdown restrictions.

Police have been told they can fine anyone flouting the new law. The fee will be £100, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.
