Edinburgh residents report strange smell in city as gas company inundated with calls

Locals have reported a strange odour in Edinburgh which has been referred to as an "environmental smell." Residents took to social media on Saturday, January 15 to raise their concerns with one person tweeting: "Edinburgh stinking of gas." Another asked: "What's the weird smell in Edinburgh New Town?"Gas company SGN tweeted at 6.23pm: "The environmental smell in Edinburgh is moving from EH15 to the town centre."We're experiencing a high number of calls and our engineers are carrying out checks at various locations."The smell in the air isn't being caused by gas, but if you have safety concerns call 0800 111 999." It comes after the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) rushed to the city's St Andrew Square following a 'suspected' gas leak earlier in the day.

Two vehicles were deployed to the scene at 4.15pm.An SFRS spokesperson said: "We received a call of a suspected gas leak at 4.15pm on Saturday, January 15, at St Andrew Square in Edinburgh."Two vehicles have been deployed and are currently in attendance." A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Officers are currently in attendance at St Andrew Square, Edinburgh and are assisting the Scottish and Fire and Rescue Service with traffic management."
