East Kilbride railway platform torn up and new station framework erected during 16-week closure

East Kilbride's new railway station is starting to take shape as major works begin to modernise the trainline during a 16-week closure.

Network Rail shared an image of the platform being ripped up and the steel framework of the new station already erected in week two of the improvement works.

Rail replacement bus services have been operating between East Kilbride and Thornliebank since January 25, with no trains to run on the line until May 18.

The works are part of a £139.8million electrification of the 14-mile line between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central, which will also see new stations built at East Kilbride and Hairmyres on the footprint of the old stations.The new accessible station building at East Kilbride is expected to open in June 2025.Work on the station commenced in February 2024.
