Members of East Kilbride Probus Club were entertained with a talk from Liz Macintyre Allan who spoke on the fascinating life of Elsie Inglis.Liz grew up on the Southside of Glasgow, going to Glasgow University where she achieved an Honours Degree in Comparative Religion.Having raised a family she went back academic life as a mature student and now retired, she enjoys storytelling and today it was all about Elsie Inglis an important, but often forgotten, Scottish doctor.Her talk was accompanied by slides, and the first up was of a photograph of Elsie Inglis which showed her determined character.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

As a result, he saw that young Elsie was home schooled.Sometime later, they all moved to Tasmania then finally landed in Edinburgh when Elsie was just aged 14.They lived in the New Town and Elsie went to a local girls’ school.On leaving, she went to Edinburgh University to train as a doctor, qualifying aged 28.

After gaining experience at several hospitals, she set up her own practice just off the High Street – one of the poorest areas.Later in 1904, aged 40, she had a hospital built.
