Express reports.It currently sits around 240,000 miles away.Astronomers can measure the distance of the moon from Earth by firing lasers at it and measuring how long that beam takes to return to earth.There are five panels on the moon – two delivered by Apollo 11 and 14 in 1969 and ’71, respectively – which feature around 100 mirrors each.
Three further panels were delivered by Apollo 15, and two Soviet robotic rovers in the early 70s.This is also how our GPS maintains accuracy on our smart devices, too – although beams are fired at satellites, not the moon – and is actually done in the UK from the Space Geodesy Facility in Halisham, near Eastbourne.Some experts, however, are also warning the moon could eventually move closer to earth over.
