E17 frontman Tony Mortimer made a poignant revelation about the band's Christmas classic, Stay Now, during an appearance on BBC Breakfast with hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, explaining that the beloved festive anthem actually sprang from personal tragedy rather than holiday cheer.
The 54 year old singer and songwriter explained that the hit was not initially intended to be associated with Christmastime.
It was only after music executives decided it could rival seasonal favourites that it was released for the festive market. Speaking candidly, Mortimer admitted: "It had nothing to do with Christmas.
But they heard it, the powers that be and said that's a Christmas song that can compete with the likes of Mariah Carey. And I was like, 'oh please don't release this song.'" Sally sought clarity on why he was hesitant, prompting Tony to express how much the track meant to him: "Because it was so personal.
