The Dunhill Links Championship is in grave danger of turning into a $5 million washout after play was abandoned for the second day running.Dunhill supremo Johann Rupert insisted on Sunday that organisers press ahead with hastily revised plans to avoid the tournament being declared null and void in the record books.

But the fate of the event is dependent on Carnoustie being declared playable at 7.30 on Monday morning.Otherwise the shutters will also come down at the Old Course and Kingsbarns where they plan a 2-tee start with a shotgun start at Carnoustie at 11.30.

Officials reluctantly pulled the plug at 10am when they also announced that the third round would be played on Monday. They hoped to play all 72 holes to preserve the format and the integrity of the tournament. But they were left with no choice but to reduce the glamour tournament to a 54-hole event after extending the championship by 24-hours on Saturday for only the second time in its 23-year history.

Monsoon-like conditions across Fife and Tayside left the venues experiencing major flooding issues. Most problems appear to have been at Carnoustie where the Barry Burn was understood to be close to bursting its banks.
