Care homes in the region are “at breaking point” as figures show falling capacity amid a growing workforce crisis.The number of facilities in Dumfries and Galloway has fallen by 26 per cent in a decade.And that has resulted in a reduction of 122 registered care home places across the region.South of Scotland MSP Colin Smyth is calling for better pay for the sector to help tackle the problem.He said: “Staffing shortages are driving this emergency, and it is little wonder after so many years of shoddy pay and conditions.“Our care homes really have been at the epicentre of the Covid crisis and staff have been working heroically in incredibly difficult circumstances but too often they are underpaid and don’t get the recognition they deserve.“As
