Drivers could be slapped with a fine and three points on their licence if they break a rule while de-icing their car windows this week.
The warning comes as temperatures across the country plummet, with lows of -4C forecast across Greater Manchester and -8C elsewhere in the UK.
Yellow weather alerts are in place for snow and ice from 5pm on Tuesday until 11am on Wednesday for parts of northern and eastern Scotland, north-east England and Yorkshire.
A separate warning is also in place from 5pm on Wednesday until 11am on Thursday for eastern Scotland and north-east England down to North Yorkshire.
