Drivers over 44 warned about licence rule that could mean £5,000 fine if broken

Older drivers who fail to follow one driving licence rule risk being slapped with hefty fines.Experts are warning motorists of a certain age must hold a certain qualification on their licence that covers caravan transportation and those that fail to follow them may be force to cough up £5,000 in penalties.

Those who transport heavy models over 3.5 tonnes must hold a C1 entitlement and while younger drivers under 44 only need to renew this every five years, this renewal requirement increases at middle age, Birmingham Live reports.Max Schmidt, head of camper tour operator, CamperDays, explained: "C1 licence holders under 44 must renew their licence every five years, but those aged 44+ must renew annually.

Once the driver reaches 70, it’s automatically expired but can be reissued for an additional three years at a time following successful D4 medical and vision assessments.”If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 you can only drive vehicles with a maximum mass of 3,500kg, which restricts the number of motorhomes you can drive unless you take a further driving test.

GoTowing warns drivers caught towing without the correct licence could face a fine of up to £5,000 and could be issued up to nine penalty points.If you passed your driving test after January 1, 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can drive either a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500 kilograms (kg), Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) towing a trailer of up to 750kg MAM (with a combined weight of up to 4,250kg in total) or a trailer over 750kg MAM (with a combined GROSS* weight of the vehicle and trailer up to 3,500kg in total).For anything heavier, you need to take a category B+E driving test.
