Drivers issued warning over M56 closure this weekend

Drivers are being reminded that a busy stretch of the M56 will be shut at times this weekend. It comes as National Highways engineers finish an £85m upgrade project.

The westbound stretch of the motorway between Hale and Altrincham will be intermittently shut. National Highways is upgrading the motorway between junction six for at Hale and junction eight for Bowdon, adding an extra lane in each carriageway and 'extensive extra technology' to help make journeys 'smoother'.

The westbound carriageway will be closed from junction five to junction five for two periods this weekend. There will be break to accommodate football traffic heading to and from Old Trafford as United face Arsenal at 4pm on Sunday (September 4). Access to the airport at junction five will be open at all times, but a motorway diversion away from the westbound M56 stretch will be in place for other drivers heading beyond the airport to the M6 and North Wales.
