Drivers could be hit with an £80 fine if they don't follow this 50cm parking rule.Motorists tend to believe that they are safe to park on a road, as long as there is no restrictions, like double yellow lines, in place.
However, there is another parking rule that could leave drivers out of pocket. Most people think double parking is when cars obstruct another by parking alongside or behind it, but this isn't the only issue.
Double parking rules also come into play when cars are parked along the kerb.According to The Highway Code : "You must not leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road." Drivers often overlook one key detail in this rule.
There is a legal requirement for vehicles to be parked close enough to the kerb; specifically within 50cm. According to Kent Live, drivers can be in breach of the code if "no part of the vehicle is within 50cm of the edge of the carriageway (kerb line)", and the owner risks receiving a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN).
