A carer died as he tried in vain to rescue a man he was looking after from a freezing canal - who also lost his life. The tragedy was revealed today (Wednesday) as the family of Aaron Ritchie, who had special needs, paid tribute to him.
Police believe Aaron, 49, was walking along the towpath of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Wigan when he fell in. His carer then went into the water to try and rescue him.
Emergency crews were called to the scene at 2.15pm yesterday (Tuesday) after being told two men had entered the water at Crank Wood Canal, in Abram, Wigan, and got into difficulty.
The men were recovered from the water by specialist divers during a huge emergency response. Medics battled to save them, but both men sadly later died in hospital.
