Double-decker bus crashes into Kilmarnock railway bridge in major incident

A double-decker bus has crashed into a railway bridge in Kilmarnock with passengers on board.Police were called to the collision on Culzean Crescent in the town and sealed off the area.Footage shared on social media shows people standing on top of the roofless Stagecoach which appears to be route 6.Another clip showed people being ushered off of the bus.

It is understood there were more than two dozen passengers onboard at the time. Debris from the shredded roof could be seen lying on the road behind the vehicle.It is unknown if anyone is injured.Councillor Barry Douglas warned residents to avoid the area.He said: "I hope everyone on the bus and any pedestrians in the area are ok and that there are no injuries as a result of the accident."I would urge anyone travelling by train heading south to Auchinleck/New Cumnock/Carlisle or returning to Kilmarnock by train to check with ScotRail to ensure the trains are running incase bridge inspection works that may be necessary lead to cancellations or delays."ScotRail confirmed services are no affected but inspectors from Network Rail are in attendance.It comes days after a similar incident saw a double-decker bus hit a railway bridge in Glasgow leaving one person in a critical condition and multiple others injured.The incident happened around 5.55pm on Saturday evening on Cook Street in the Tradeston of the city centre and involved a First Bus vehicle on the 4A route.An investigation remains ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We are in attendance on Culzean Crescent in Kilmarnock following a crash involving a double decker bus.
