Dr Neil Thomas, 68, had been fishing at the canal in Selly Oak when he was attacked by one of the gang, while the rest of the teenagers watched on.

The university physics lecturer said if the water had been a couple of feet deeper, he might not have made it out alive, Birmingham Live reports. “I can’t swim very well and was weighed down by my boots, fishing vest and rucksack," he said. “I was also holding on to my fishing rod.
