Dee and Glenkens council candidates to take part in New Galloway hustings

The council election campaign in the Dee and Glenkens will step up a gear on Monday evening with a hustings in New Galloway.And the hosts, Glenkens Community and Arts Trust (GCAT), are hoping for a good turnout at the CatStrand for the 7.30pm event.Seven candidates have been invited to make their pitch – Andy McFarlane (SNP), John Denerley and Susan Murdoch (Conservative), Laura Moodie (Greens), Graham Trickey (Labour), Anthony Bird (Lib Dems) and Dougie Campbell (Independent).Only three seats are up for grabs in the ward which last time around returned a Conservative, an independent and an SNP councillor.Meeting chairman Alan Smith told the News: “I do think it is extremely important that the electorate have a chance to hear what the candidates have to say.“We need to know what their opinions are on the matters which are important to us.

This ward has a very engaged and committed electorate and I would hope that we would get a good attendance and an interesting question and answer session.Mr Smith added: “I have recently stood down as chairman of GCAT but will be acting as the independent chairman of this event.“We have held hustings before the last two local authority elections.

These have been well attended and featured lively and civilised debate.”Voting in the council elections will be by single transferable vote.On the ballot papers voters are invited to rank candidates in order of preference, placing a “1” in the box beside their favourite, a “2” beside their second favourite, and so on.
