Strictly Come Dancing line-up changed the way she was previously perceived by the public. Paul and Debbie were married for 28 years until his death in 2016 at the age of 77 from an inoperable brain tumour.Debbie appeared in the 2017 series alongside professional dance partner Giovanni Pernice. The pair finished in second place, but for Debbie, it was much more than just a dance contest. She said: “I had the best partner in Giovanni, and I was back in show business again."People knew who I was before, but I was still the magician’s assistant.“Since Strictly I’ve been Debbie McGee in my own right,” Debbie added to Hello magazine.Earlier this year, the former magician's assistant opened up about the devastating loss of her husband and their final days together.Speaking in a candid interview back in March, she said the illness "stripped Paul of everything" after he was initially told he had pernicious anaemia in 2016.A treatable condition, the magician took a course of antibiotics and was assumed to recover soon. However, Debbie became concerned when Paul exhibited lethargic behaviour, including getting up late in the morning and sitting around watching TV.Paul went to see a neurosurgeon and the couple was given the devastating news he had a grade 4 brain tumour, which Debbie branded "highly aggressive".Despite "breaking down" at the news, Debbie arranged for Paul to return home and vowed to take care of him herself during the two months of prognosis he had been given by medical professionals. However, in the end the magician only lived for another month and five days while being looked after by his devoted wife Debbie. The Strictly star told how family and friends came to spend time with Paul and they enjoyed the good weather.
