A probe into the death of Scots serial killer Peter Tobin is set to be held after he died in hospital.The 76-year-old was taken to the hospital on September 9, 2022, after falling in his cell at HMP Edinburgh the night before.The vile murderer remained under the watch of medics and GeoAmey officers at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he received surgery for a broken hip and palliative care.The fiend, who was suffering from prostate cancer, died around one month later on October 8.He was serving three life terms for the murders of Angelika Kluk, Vicky Hamilton and Dinah McNicol. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service have now announced that a Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held to examine the circumstances of his custody death.

A preliminary hearing will be held on May 27 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.Procurator Fiscal Andy Shanks, who leads on fatalities investigations for COPFS, said: “The Lord Advocate considers that the death of Peter Tobin occurred while in legal custody and as such a Fatal Accident Inquiry is mandatory.“The lodging of the First Notice enables FAI proceedings to commence under the direction of the Sheriff.”The purpose of a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) includes determining the cause of death; the circumstances in which the deaths occurred, and to establish what, if any, reasonable precautions could have been taken, and could be implemented in the future, to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are inquisitorial in nature, and are used to establish facts rather than to apportion blame.In 2008, Tobin was convicted of murdering
