James Bladen, 41, from Pentrebane in Cardiff, said he was fined over £1,000 after sleeping through his alarm, jumping on the scooter and shooting off.
James told Wales Online he bought the £400 e-scooter for his 17-year-old son, Tionree, who suggested his dad borrowed it to get to his appointment at a surgery in Ely a couple of miles away.
But James, who had never ridden the e-scooter before, was stopped by officers from South Wales Police just around the corner from his home.
