Coronavirus infections 'haven't fallen' in January despite strict lockdown

Coronavirus cases didn't fall in the first 10 days of England's third national lockdown and experts have warned it appears to be having little impact on infection rates.

The prevalence of Covid-19 in the community was "very high" during the second week of the strict shutdown, soaring by 50 per cent between early December and January 15, a new study has found.

Random swabbing of 142,000 people in England between January 6 and 15 found "no evidence" of a decline in cases, with one in 63, or about 900,000 people, infected.

Until rates are reduced substantially, health services "will remain under extreme pressure" and the number of deaths will continue to rise rapidly, warned researchers behind the latest React study from Imperial College
