The result propelled Chelsea to the summit of the Premier League table for a few hours until Tottenham defeated Manchester City later in the evening to take top spot.
A standout performer in Frank Lampard 's side was full-back Reece James, who produced an excellent display in defence to keep tricky Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin quiet throughout the match.
