Animal activists have warned efforts are being made to “hoodwink” the Scottish Government over lethal snares. A consultation looks likely to ban the traps, which cause agonising deaths for animals. But charities League Against Cruel Sports and One Kind believe Scottish environment minister Gillian Martin may have been won over by intense lobbying by landowners to licence “humane cable restraints” in place of snares.

They claim the devices are the same.Robbie Marsland, director of the League Against Cruel Sports Scotland, said: “Humane cable restraints are exactly the same as snares – the only difference is the name.“Both have precisely the same capacity to cause extreme suffering and pain to the animals that become trapped in them, so banning snares would be absolutely pointless if they were replaced by something equally as brutal.“Surely the Scottish Government can see this is a ploy by those who want to continue using snares to rebrand these traps to try to justify their continued use.”The charities made a video showing how the two devices are depicted by the same graphic in England – one by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and another by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust. They said the government is “in danger of being hoodwinked into the continuation of cruel and indiscriminate snares”.The Scottish Government said it would confirm details of the proposed ban “once we have fully considered” the responses to the consultation.Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland. No one will be able to see who is signed up and no one can send messages except the
