Like all local authorities, Manchester is often in need of lawyers on a wide range of matters and the budget for legal services for 2020/21 is £6.5million.
The authority has its own team of in-house lawyers, but it also spends a substantial amount on hiring outside services. An analysis by the M.E.N of council spending over £500 for 2020 shows just over £1.1million went on external 'legal fees'.
