Thousands of people have made for the coast as late May temperatures soared, but when they set off home all too many of them left a mass of litter behind.

Beauty spots such as Durdle Door in Dorset and Southsea Common in Hampshire were left covered beer cans, wine bottles and gas containers used by drug abusers.

Formby beach in Merseyside was another popular beauty spot left in a terrible mess by visitors. Disposable barbecues, food containers and even dirty nappies were left behind by day-trippers who ignored the lockdown to enjoy a day in the bright spring sunshine.

Local officials expressed their disappointment with visitors’ carelessness. Cllr Hugh Ashton, a Lib Dem member of Lichfield City Council, said: "Beacon Park is a wonderful
