Our galaxy has at least 100 billion planets, leading many to question whether there is life outside of Earth. Researchers have now developed a simple test that could get us closer to the answer.
The new method involves looking for movement in microbes – tiny living things that are found all around us – as a sign of life and could be used to find life on Mars.
A research team in Germany has developed a technique that uses amino acids, which are the building blocks that make up protein, to find microbes that can move independently.
The amino acid, called L-serine, induced movement in tiny organisms known as bacteria and archaea. This process, when movement is induced by a chemical, is known as chemotaxis.
