Boeing 737 carrying 133 people crashes into mountain in China

A plane carrying more than 100 passengers has crashed into a mountain in China, with smoke being seen terminating from the site of the incident.

According to Chinese state television, the Boeing 737 was flying from Kunming to Guangzhou but suffered an "accident" over the mountainous Guangxi region.

Around 133 passengers were onboard the China Eastern Airlines flight at the time of the crash. Read more: Man, 33, dies after falling off motorbike while riding in tandem It is currently unknown how many casualties there are but a rescue team is said to have been sent to the region.

The Guangxi Emergency Management Department said in a statement: "A Boeing 737 passenger plane carrying 133 people from China Eastern Airlines crashed in Teng County, Wuzhou, Guangxi, and caused a mountain fire. "At present, rescue teams have assembled and approached, and the casualties are unknown." The Aviation Safety Network tweeted: "We are following multiple unconfirmed reports about a possible accident involving China Eastern Airlines flight #MU5735 a Boeing 737-89P (B-1791) en route from Kunming to Guanghzou, China." Images on social media claim to show large pieces of the plane's fuselage which was apparently discovered by locals in the surrounding area.
