The Benfica squad bus was attacked by their own fans in a shock turn of events on Thursday evening. The Portuguese giants failed to capitalise on Porto’s defeat to Famalicao by drawing with Tondela in their first match back in Primeira Liga action following the break, and are now level on points at the top with nine games to go.
Fans had gathered outside the stadium of the reigning champions after being blocked from entering the ground for their own safety, but the evening ended in two players being taken to hospital.
Germany international and former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl and Serbia international Andrija Zivkovic were hit with shrapnel after the vehicle were in was stoned, and they were both treated as a precaution.
