They've been gracing the airwaves for nearly half a century - but many Bee Gees fans don't know what one of their most popular songs is actually about.
Comprised of brothers Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, the band has sold more than 120 million records worldwide, including Stayin' Alive, Night Fever, How Deep Is Your Love, Massachusetts, More Than a Woman, You Should Be Dancing and Don't Forget to Remember.
However, their iconic track Stayin' Alive, while known for its infectious rhythm, actually carries a more sombre message. Smooth Radio reports that RSO Records initially proposed 'Saturday Night' as the song's title, but the Bee Gees rejected this due to an abundance of songs already featuring 'Saturday' in their titles.
Additionally, their album already contained a track named Night Fever. Discussing the deeper meaning of Stayin' Alive, Robin revealed: "The subject matter of 'Stayin' Alive' is actually quite a serious one; It's about survival in the streets of New York, and the lyrics actually say that".
