Beachgoers who discover palm oil on the sands are being urged to report their find to their local marine office.Ayr MSP Siobhian Brown is calling on dog walkers and visitors to be vigilant after an alleged report of a dog becoming unwell after eating palm oil on Prestwick beach back in November.
Dogs can be attracted to the white or yellow waxy oil by its smell but, when ingested by pooches, it can result in vomiting, diarrheoa and can even be fatal.
The MSP for Ayr, Prestwick and Troon wrote to the environment minister, the International Maritime Organisation and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency demanding action and answers.
She has since received responses from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, with the latest coming from the office of Mairi McAllan, the minister for environment and land reform.
