Gardeners are being urged to rethink their bird-feeding habits as the RSPB has removed flat bird tables from sale amid concerns that they contribute to the spread of diseases among birds, especially during winter.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds acted on fears that these tables may exacerbate the transmission of ailments, in particular, those affecting the finch population.
Presenters Chris Packham and Lolo Williams, along with their BBC Winterwatch colleagues, are now advising the public to adjust their practices and opt for alternative bird-feeding methods.
The precautionary product suspension currently only applies to traditional flat bird tables, with upright feeders remaining unaffected.
