Sun writer Mike Ridley has adapted her book All Of Me: My Extraordinary Life, and today you can read all about Dame Barbara’s time in EastEnders, from being physically sick with nerves on her first day to the bonds she built with her beloved co-stars.

EASTENDERS was the answer to my prayers. I’d been performing my one-woman show but at almost 57 I was getting too old to go schlepping all over the country, kicking my legs in the air.

Earlier that year, 1994, I had been at a party given by Mike Reid and told a young woman that I’d love to play a character of my own age for once.
