The magical moment of a descendant of Robert Burns being baptised in Airdrie was commemorated with a special plaque.The memorial was unveiled at the town's One Wellwynd honouring the baptism of Jean Weir, the Bard's great-granddaughter.It was installed in partnership with Airdrie Burns Club and North Lanarkshire’s Council’s community partnership team at the entrance of the old church building, now home to the local authority's offices.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Jean was their third child and the first of their family to be born in Airdrie.Jean’s two brothers, George and James, founded the famous Scottish engineering firm of G & J Weir of Cathcart in Glasgow.Further distinction followed and James’ son, William Douglas Weir, was created 1st Viscount Weir of Eastwood and thus became the only descendant of Robert Burns to be ennobled.The plaque-unveiling ceremony in Airdrie was attended by local council officials; Marc Sherland, president of the Lanarkshire Association of Burns Clubs; and president William Brooks and members of Airdrie Burns Club, with a piper playing a lament to conclude the event.North
