Imagine you're embarking on the holiday of a lifetime, breezed through security at your dream destination and are eagerly waiting for your luggage to appear on the airport carousel but as your bag rounds the corner, it's clear it's taken a beating. It's dented, perhaps the zip is broken, and there's a sinking feeling that anything delicate inside has been smashed to pieces. This scenario is every traveller's worst nightmare, but thankfully there are measures you can take to prevent your luggage from being mishandled by baggage workers.

A baggage handler recently took to Reddit to offer insights into their job, inviting people to ask them questions, the Express reports. They revealed that the secret to keeping your belongings safe lies in the wheels.

Luggage with at least two, but ideally four, functioning wheels means handlers can roll it into the aircraft hold rather than throwing it.Without wheels, your bag is almost guaranteed to be tossed into the hold, increasing the risk of damage.

The baggage handler admitted their "absolute least favourite" bags to deal with were those with jammed wheels. They explained: "We try to roll it down, but it just falls over after moving six inches."To protect your possessions, the airport employee recommends investing in a high-quality bag with four smooth-rolling wheels, a soft interior, and a sturdy exterior shell to cushion your items. The baggage handler confessed that the commonly used 'fragile' stickers barely ensure protection to the luggage, suggesting they could even invite rougher treatment from some staff.
